I went out to the Ballyronan Marina earlier today in an attempt to cleanse my sanity from all the doomscrolling I’ve been doing over these last couple of days. The Los Angeles wildfires have been all over my social media feeds and it’s been absolutely heartbreaking to watch. I’ll do what I can to help and show support for those in need, but at the moment, I think I need to take another step back from social media.

Goddamn it, I really do hate having to bury my head in the sand during times like this because I feel so selfish and ignorant. I know I can only do so much, but the reality is that there are so many serious problems facing us right now (unchecked AI running rampant, billionaires exerting a stranglehold on everything from global politics to the entertainment industry, propaganda, war, dehumanisation, global warming, social media becoming a playground for bigotry and misinformation). These problems all go hand-in-hand with each other and simply turning the other cheek isn’t suddenly going to make them disappear, but at the same time, I’m well aware of just how necessary it is to tune these things out from time to time.

I can’t stress enough, though, that my heart still goes out to anyone who’s been affected by the fires. Please stay safe and look out for anybody else who may be in need.
