Nosferatu

Just after seeing Nosferatu an hour ago.

It's either my favourite movie of 2025 (so far) or my third favourite movie of 2024. I can't decide, and it's frustrating because usually, most of last year's big awards contenders don't come out over here until January. At least, it's not like back in the old days where you had for months or even a full year for a movie's theatrical rollout.

Either way, I really loved this film. It's a decidedly unromantic retelling of the Dracula mythos with Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok completely lacking the tragedy of Gary Oldman and the charisma of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. No, this Count is decrepit, lecherous, and lustful but no less hypnotic or captivating, and Skarsgård is bloody brilliant in the role.

The rest of the performances are also superb. Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult were both stellar and I'm also kind of loving Aaron-Taylor Johnson in his snobby twit phase... see The Fall Guy and Bullet Train for more proof of that. I also loved Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney and Ralph Ineson... especially the latter, he's an excellent character actor who pops up in everything and I'm pretty stoked to see him play Galactus in the upcoming Fantastic Four film... Willem Dafoe is awesome as always and I get the feeling that he would be an awesome Van Helsing.

I think Robert Eggers is now officially one of my favourite filmmakers. I dig his uncompromising style of monochromatic yet eerily beautiful period horror, and I can't wait to see what he does next.
